Not every smoothie will fortify your body with vitamins. Read on about the six cardinal sins of smoothie-making that rob your smoothies of their valuable qualities.

As the temperature outside rises, refreshing drinks and smoothies spring into action to replace your breakfast or dessert. Smoothies can be made with plant-based beverages, milk or Greek yogurt. A quick shot of vitamins and antioxidants will help you feel energized and ready for the day, but to unlock the full potential of smoothies, you must follow a few important rules.

Do you think that making a smoothie is easy as ABC? Even though the process itself is not difficult, there’re some tricky things to keep in mind. Home-made smoothies have plenty of benefits, but to take full advantage of them, you need to steer clear of common mistakes when making and drinking them. What are these mistakes?

  • Skipping vegetables – fruit smoothies are a sugar bomb; every vegetable ingredient increases the fiber content, so if you make a strawberry-based smoothie, for example, spruce it up with some avocado, which is rich in nutrients and low in sugar.
  • Drinking smoothies a few hours after preparation – do you take your smoothie with you to sip on your commute? Smoothies lose some of their vitamins when exposed to higher temperatures and sunlight.  Left in the sun for 15 minutes, they turn from green to gray. It’s best to drink your smoothie right after making it or put it in a thermal cup. This will prevent the loss of vitamin C.
  • Excessive blending – blending fruit and vegetables creates heat, so it’s best to keep your blending time to a minimum.
  • Air access – unless you put your smoothie in air-tight packaging, it loses vitamins, especially vitamin A.  As a result, it loses much of its health benefits.
  • Peeling fruit – fruit skin is rich in dietary fiber, so if you peel fruit and vegetables, you remove the beneficial fiber from your smoothie.
  • Ignoring leafy greens – in a nutshell, failure to incorporate kale, spinach or parsley into your smoothies is a sin against your health. Green ingredients may give your smoothie a green hue and intense flavor, but they contain a lot of dietary fiber as well as health-boosting vitamins and antioxidants.
